It is March 1025…
A delegation returns from Rome bringing news and a crown for Bolesław the Brave.
The Pope himself wrote:
– „To the beloved in Christ Bolesław, Prince of the Polans, In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. We, John, by the grace of God Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Saint Peter, greet you, Venerable Bolesław, faithful son of the Church, who through your deeds and zeal in spreading the faith has shown yourself to be a worthy anointed of the Lord.
We have considered with great consideration your request, which has reached the Apostolic See, and which has already been raised many times. We remember the great deeds of your father, Mieszko, who was the first among the people of the Polans to accept the light of the Gospel and lead his people on the path of true faith. We also know that you, dearest son, not only strengthened the foundations of the Church in your country, but also, fighting with weapons and the wisdom of government, defended Christianity among pagan nations, showing the prudence and courage that God requires from his anointed ones.
We remember the favor that Emperor Otto III of holy memory showed you, seeing in you a ruler worthy of royal purple. However, the affairs of this world did not allow for the fulfillment of this justice at that time. But today, we, by the will of God Almighty, accede to your request and recognize you as worthy of the royal crown.
So let your power, hitherto princely, be clothed in royal majesty in the name of God and with the consent of the Apostolic See. We command that you be anointed and crowned King of Poland, so that in the name of the Lord you may rule wisely and justly, defending the holy faith and increasing the glory of the Church.
May God Almighty guide you in your government, may Saint Adalbert, whose body rests in your kingdom, intercede for you, and we from Rome bring in prayer requests for the prosperity of you and your people. John XIX, Bishop of Rome, Servant Servants of God Annual of Our Lord 1025, month of March”.
